Can't Hurt Me Summary

DAVID GOGGINS

David Goggins, a name, most of you are familiar with. And for those who had not heard this name before, allow me to tell you that he is an American ultramarathon runner, retired UN Navy Seal, triathlete, public speaker, influencer, former UN Air Force Tactical Air Control Party member who served during the Iraq war and the author of Can’t Hurt Me.

INTRODUCTION

Achieving all these has never been a piece of cake. He started from zero, he sacrificed many things, he got failed several times. But instead of mourning over new challenges and failures, he fought with them. And to me, this made him extra-ordinary.

We have only two options with us. Either rule your mind or let your mind rule over you. And this man chooses to control his mind, body, and soul. Despite being a victim of his childhood trauma, racism, and bullying, he fought tooth and nail to achieve his goal.

Life is full of challenges and how you deal with them decides the future. I reckon that madness, obsession, craving, whatever you call it, is a must to achieve your aim. And the quote by Martin Luther King really fits here – “If you have not discovered something, you would die for. You are not fit to live.”

Can’t hurt Me will take you to the journey of David Goggins, and there he will be sharing his techniques which he developed during his hard times to deal with the pain. There are so much to learn from this. And I am feeling so grateful that I came across this book, and I am so glad that he wrote this.

CHALLENGES GIVEN BY DAVID GOGGINS

Challenge no. 1

Write down all your past traumas, bullies, insecurities, abuse, comforting nature, and the time you did not push yourself in spite of knowing that you could do it.

Next, write down the present limiting factors that are stopping you from achieving your highest self. It can include someone who is stopping your way at school, college, work or even home. Are you underappreciated and overlooked for opportunities? Are you standing in your way? What are the odds you are up against right now?

Write down all these things in your journal, app, notes or wherever you want. Tell your story in full and give shape to your pain. Now, share it with whoever you want. You can even post it to social media using the hashtag #badhand #canthurtme. You may also do accept it privately. Do however you like it but do it.

Challenge no. 2

This challenge will be your first step toward becoming the real you. Write all your goals in the Post-It note. Paste this note where it can be easily accessible. The goals may be related to your career, quitting the job and starting a business, for instance. It can be an athletic goal like running 5k, 10k, or a marathon. You just need to be truthful with yourself now.

Write down each step that should be taken to achieve your goal. Do some research and break it down into daily activities. For example, if you want to lose some weight, your first Post-It would be to lose two pounds in the first week. Once you achieved this goal, remove the Post-It note and paste another one ordering you to lose two to five pounds in the upcoming week. Do this thing until your ultimate goal is realised.

Follow this with utmost sincerity and discipline. You may also post this to social media using the hashtag #accountabilitymirror and #canthurtme.

Challenge no. 3

Dig out your daily journal and write down the things that make you feel uncomfortable while doing or things you don’t want to do but you know inside that they are good for you. Now go do it.

It can be anything like doing the dishes, getting up before dawn, ironing your clothes, making your bed, exercising. Start from small, like running 2 miles each day, then 5 miles and then take it to 10 miles.

If your someone who is doing all these things, then find out some which you are not doing or something you are weak at. At this time make your weakness your strength.

Doing even the smallest uncomfortable thing will make you strong. The more uncomfortable you get, the more-stronger you become.

Take a photo in your uncomfortable zone and post it on social media. Describe all the what and why you're doing using the hashtag #discomfortzone #pathofmostresistance #impossibletask #canthurtme.

Challenge no.4

David Goggins is now challenging you to write down the competitive situation you are in right now. Write down the name of all your opponents, and competitors. These competitors can be your teacher, boss, client. The only thing that can not only earn their respect but also turn the table and that thing are Excellence.

Work harder than before on each task and assignment. Do everything they ask you to do and surpass the standard they had set up for you. Whoever you are dealing with, your goal will be to make them watch you doing the things that they never did. Use their negativity as fuel for your excellence. And once you did that, post this on social media using the hashtag #takingsouls, and  #canthurtme.

Challenge no. 5

An average person thinks at-least 2,000 to 3,000 thoughts per hour. Therefore, this challenge will be related to this only. Instead of thinking bullshit thoughts, visualize your goals. Set up your goal and visualize the obstacles you will be dealing with.

Doing this also means getting prepared for simple questions like Why are you doing this? What is driving you to achieve your call? Where does this darkness you are using as fuel come from? Why you can not afford to lose this? What has calloused your mind? These questions must be at your fingertips when you hit the lower state of your mind.

No doubt it will require a lot of suffering but if you do it, a new life is waiting for you on the other end of this suffering. Victory does not mean that you always come in the first place. Post the picture with this challenge using the hashtag #armoredmind and tell the world where it has taken you.

Challenge no. 6

Crack your journal again and write down all your achievements. Don’t just include your trophies, write down the obstacles you have overcome while doing the task like overcoming depression, quitting smoking, or procrastination. Include the task which you had failed at first but after the second, or third time you succeeded at. Feel the pleasure or pain in dealing with those opponents, obstacles, and win.

Use this pleasure as fuel for future achievements. For example, if anytime you get tired or feel like not doing it, remember the pleasure or read your journal. It will give a sense of pride and you will get back to your work easily.

Now, post your memory and how it helped you in achieving your new success on social media using the hashtag #cookiejar and #canthurtme.

Challenge no. 7

Your challenge is to remove the governor from the brain. And for this, you have performed yours so intensely that your mind will beg you to stop. After this time push yourself for the next 5 to 10 per cent. For example, if you are running thirty miles each week then increasing this value to 10 per cent from next week, if you did one hundred push-ups then go for doing hundred and five or hundred and ten.

This will prevent you from any injury and allow your body to slowly adapt to the new workload. This will also increase your baseline as you will be increasing your workload by 5 to 10% every week.

Physical challenges involve so much pain that it is the best training to take command of your dialogues. If you are underperforming in the physical tasks, you will realise soon that you are underperforming at work or school too.

Stick to this process and soon you realise that you are doing the things that once you thought impossible. Make the world hear your story using the hashtag #The40percentrule, #dontgetcomfortable, and #canthurtme.

Challenge no. 8

Too many of us become multi-tasker which creates a notion of half-assess. So, this three-week challenge is related to multi-tasking only.

During the first week go as usual you spend your week and write down all the activities that consume your time. For instance, when do you work? Do you work nonstop or check your phone in between, When do you exercise or watch TV? How much time your meal takes? How long is your chat with your friends? How much time do you spend with family? Get super duper in detail of each point.

In the second week, schedule your task and give fifteen minutes time block to each task. Some tasks may want more blocks and an entire day. Accumulate your entire focus on this one task only for fifteen minutes and now go for the second task and give focus to this task.  Make sure your schedule includes sleep and rest too. Do not check your phone during the task and if you are resting, rest properly.

Makes notes with the timestamp in the second week and you will find some residual time-space.

In the third week, you must have a working schedule that maximizes your effort without sacrificing sleep. Tell your schedule to the world by posting on social media using the hashtag #talentnotrequired and #canthurtme.

Challenge no. 9

Most people think that once they reached a certain level of respect, success, status, they have made it in their life. But it’s not the truth. Success evaporates easily like the flash of oil in the hot pain.

To maintain your status, you have to reach a second level every time you cross the first one. Give yourself challenges and continue to put yourself in obstacles, even if there’s no competitor for you. Remember you are your own biggest competitor. This will keep you on track and help you in becoming more-stronger.

Post your story on social media using the hashtag #uncommonamongstuncommon and #canthurtme.

Challenge no. 10

Break out the journal one last time and write down your most recent failure. Describe your heart-wrenching failure in deeper with long-hand. Feel this process, feel your pain. This is your After Action Report.

Start with writing all the good things that happened to you during the task, then note down how you failed and how you handled your failure? Did it affect your personal life? If so, then how? How did you think during the preparation and execution stage of your failure? You have to think deeply about how you were thinking and what you were feeling at each step. Dive deeper into your mindset.

Now write down the things you could have fixed. Don’t be sweet or generous. Be brutally strict and honest. Write them all down without hesitation. Next, look at your calendar and schedule the next attempt as soon as possible.

Share your stories from preparation, training, failure, and execution on social media using the hashtag #empowermentoffailure #canthurtme.
